CAN Community Council


 

Community Council Purpose

The Community Council is the community voice and oversight body for the Community Action Network

Chair:

  • Recommended by Community Council Nominating Committee
  • Voted on by Community Council membership
  • Serves 1-year term (January-December)

Membership:

10 Consumer or Services Representatives, 10 Professional/ Expert Representatives, 10 General Community Representatives and a Council Representative from each CAN partner

Term for Members:

  • 3 yrs. (with possible re-election, maximum total of 6 yrs)
  • Community Council Partner Representatives serve at discretion of partner organization

Meeting Frequency:

Third Monday of each month 5:30-7:30pm at One Texas Center (exceptions will be noted)

Annual CAN Retreat - The CAN retreat is held on a Friday in October. CAN Community Council members are expected to attend

Function :

  • Acts as a bridge between the CAN and the community
  • Provides forum for community input and ensures grass roots perspective in CAN processes
  • Fosters, encourages and enhances collaborative efforts whenever possible
  • Determines how to deal with politically sensitive issues with different CAN partner views
  • Achieves consensus through a process with integrity
  • Identifies service areas needing additional attention
  • Raises community awareness about HHS issues
  • Mobilizes the community to support the CAN agenda and activities
  • Ensures community involvement in community assessment and planning around HHS issues
  • Elects 3 At-Large Members to serve on the CAN Resource Council
  • Makes recommendations directly to and gets feedback from CAN Resource Council & Administrative Team

Member Responsibilities:

  • Keeps their affiliated organizations/constituencies informed of CAN activities and information
  • Attends monthly meetings and the CAN retreat
  • Participates in other CAN sub-committees and standing committees as appropriate
  • Provides leadership and sponsors an area in which they are passionate
  • Identifies ways in which they and their affiliated organization can implement agreed upon strategies and/ or leverage resources
  • Act as a liaison between CAN and one of the Issue Area Groups, when possible
