APPENDIX D: U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION'S DRUG PREVENTION TIPS FOR CHILDREN
(Adapted from USA Today's article, Teen Addicts Point to Parents, written by Donna Leinwood, 2000, August 24)
The U.S. Department of Education has developed specific tips on how to prevent children from using drugs or to seek help if they are using drugs:
- Discuss drug use with your children and establish family rules and consequences.
- Enforce whatever consequences are established for violating rules, be consistent, and stick to it.
- If a child is under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, don't confront until he or she is sober. When sober discuss the issues calmly and objectively.
- If your child is denying use and you have strong suspicions or evidence, seek help from a health professional with experience diagnosing and treating youth with alcohol and/or drug related problems. In addition, have your family doctor rule out any physical problems.
- If you have a child with a history or pattern of drug use, seek out treatment programs.
