VII. Next Steps
The Welfare-to-Work Coalition is making great progress in its initial planning and coordination efforts. In a matter of months, the Coalition has met nearly all of the recommendations made by the Welfare Reform Task Force in their 1997 report. Using the continuum of service approach, the Coalition has:
- Identified the needs of the welfare-to-work population
- Identified challenges created by the needs
- Formulated strategies to address the challenges
- Created action plans to implement the strategies
- Designated organizations for each action plan
However, the real work has just begun. Over the next several months, the Coalition will refine and begin implementing the plans in this report. To accomplish this task, the Coalition must continue to communicate effectively and leverage community resources- both human and financial. Furthermore, the costs of various action steps and specific, responsible organizations must be identified to complete the action plans.
The primary goal of the Welfare-to-Work Coalition is to move welfare recipients in jobs and to provide them with training and supportive services necessary to keep them employed and moving towards better jobs leading ultimately to self-sufficiency. With over 80 community organizations committed to this goal, the Coalition is well on its way to making self-sufficiency a reality for many Austin/Travis County residents.
